What it means for net pay

Turin is the only city of the five with a progressive city surcharge. Low earners pay 0.8%, but the rate rises to 1.2% on the top bracket. The exemption is the lowest of the five. Senior engineers and managers in Turin pay more city surcharge than in Milan or Bologna at the same gross. Lower housing costs often balance this.

Example: on a gross salary of [€ gross], the city surcharge in Turin is about [€ amount] a year. Check the calculator for the full breakdown.

Practical notes

  • Cost of living. Rent: [one-bedroom rent, central and outer areas]. [cost of living index vs Milan]
  • Commuting. One metro line plus trams, buses and a suburban rail link. The city is flat and compact, and many people cycle.
  • Travel. High-speed trains reach Milan in about one hour. Turin airport has European flights; for the US, connect through a hub or Milan Malpensa.
  • Salaries. Typical bands: [€ ranges by role to verify].
  • Time zones. Italy is UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer: 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 ahead of San Francisco. A team working 9:00 to 18:00 has three shared hours with the East Coast (9:00 to 12:00 New York time). With the West Coast there is no overlap in a standard day, so plan a late afternoon slot in Italy or async work.
