Hire software engineers in Italy

Italy has a large pool of engineers trained in strong technical universities, many already working remotely for foreign companies. Most of your hires will be fully remote, and that changes how you set up the contract.

Usual CCNL

Commerce and services (Terziario) or Metalworking (Metalmeccanico) for tech companies. We pick the one that matches your activity and the role.

Typical roles

Backend and frontend developers, mobile, DevOps and SRE, data engineers, ML engineers, QA, engineering managers.

Where they are

Milan, Turin, Rome, Bologna, Pisa and Florence, Naples. Many senior engineers have moved to smaller towns and work remotely.

What to know

  • Remote work needs a written agreement. Italy calls it "lavoro agile". We add it to the contract, with rules on equipment and disconnection.
  • Equipment. You can ship a laptop or let us reimburse one. Either way it is documented, so it is not taxed as salary.
  • Intellectual property. Code written under an employment contract belongs to the employer. We include an explicit IP and confidentiality clause that assigns it to your company.
  • Stock options. Your equity plan can cover Italian employees. Taxation depends on the plan. [confirm treatment of US RSU/ISO for Italian residents]
  • On-call and overtime. On-call duty is paid under the CCNL. Senior engineers can be hired as "quadro" with a flat overtime arrangement.
  • Competition for seniors. Good engineers often get offers from other foreign companies. Salary in euros, clear career levels and meal vouchers help.
